Montecasino Bird ParkOn Friday 8 February, the morning school went to Monte Casino Bird Park. We were shown around by a guide and then watched a brilliant show starring all sorts of birds from owls to toucans. It was interesting and as always, fun to get out of the classroom for the day.

On Thursday 30 January, Robert Duncan and Sandra Lopez took a group of students to see the movie 'Into the Wild'. The story behind this movie appears in our Headway Text book so students enjoyed it being brought to life on screen.

Johannesburg Zoo In October we had a behind the scenes tour at the Johannesburg Zoo. We particularly enjoyed getting close up to the tigers and polar bears-luckily none of us became lunch! Students also showed off their volleyball skills at our last end of term party!

Maropeng Museum The students recently went on an outing to the Maropeng Museum, situated near the Sterkfontein World Heritage Site just north of Johannesburg. The museum traces the origins of humans and animals and the world they live in and the students found it fascinating and not to mention, enjoyable.

English Access currently has six levels running from 09h00 – 12h30 Mondays to Fridays as well as an Advanced+ class which takes place 09h00 – 12h00 Tuesdays and Thursdays. This course focuses on international exam preparation such as TOEIC, TOEFL and City and Guilds. We are also running two TEFL courses (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), one that takes place in the mornings from 09h00 – 13h00 and an evening course which takes place Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 18h00 – 21h00 and Saturdays from 09h00 – 16h00. These are courses that are aimed at people who want to learn how to teach English either abroad or locally. The head of the TEFL department is Shannon Bysshe, who has taught extensively in Australia. She is assisted by Loren Townshend (evening course) who also has a wealth of experience teaching overseas. We have recently had a joint presentation with Teach Korea, who place TEFL teachers in South Korea. English Access is currently organizing TEFL courses in Durban which will hopefully be starting in November.

In addition to this we run Saturday morning classes for domestic workers which are taught by the TEFL students and are therefore free of charge. This outreach programme has been a huge success with many regular students progressing steadily. We are currently looking for sponsors to support the courses to enable us to provide books and readers, so let us know if you’d like to get involved!! The courses are run at Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate levels.

The morning school recently went on a “Myth Buster” outing to the Johannesburg Zoo which proved to be a great success. A lot of “myths” surrounding animals were cleared up- did you know that the African Wild Dog is the most efficient hunter in the world? (100% success rate!).

We are looking forward to our next outing which will be to the Sterkfontein Caves (a World Heritage Site) in October.
