ACTIVITIES
Although
the streets of Johannesburg may seem deserted compared to where
you come from, Johannesburgers don't just stay locked up
behind high walls. There are lots of beautiful parks where, if
you take reasonable precautions, you can safely go for a walk.
Why not
try the Field and Study Centre in Louis Ave, Parkmore,
Sandton? It is situated next to an unspoilt part of a
river called the Braamfontein spruit. Many people come
jogging or take their dogs for a walk here. The park is fenced
and has security guards but it is not a good idea to walk alone
during quiet times (very early morning or late evening). For
more information about the Field and Study centre, click on
Community Centres.
How about
the Johannesburg Botanic Gardens in Emmarentia?
You can have a picnic next to the lake or go for a walk in the
extensive gardens. The entrance is on Olifants Road, Emmarentia.
If you
feel like a walk in the country but can't leave
Johannesburg, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical
Garden is the place to visit. You can climb a mountain
next to a dramatic waterfall and if you're lucky, see the black
eagles who nest in the park. Then, of course, there are the many
varieties of indigenous plants and beautiful places to picnic.
If you don't feel like taking along your own food, there is a
restaurant in the park. Admission fees: R15 per adult, R7 per
scholar/ student, children under 6 free of charge.
